In my experience they are quite accurate for common and moderately old coins. I rely on a free coin identifier app as my first step and then verify important pieces. It has correctly identified hundreds of coins for me over the past year. Of course rare errors or heavily worn coins may need expert eyes, but for everyday use it’s extremely helpful and educational.
