HOW DOES ELECTROFISHING WORK?
Electricity is passed through the water. Alternating Current or Direct Current can be used depending on the situation. During the electrofishing process the current is passed between the electrodes, the anode (positive) and the cathode (negative). When applying the correct current, fish will experience a muscle response reaction called taxis. This will cause a swimming motion toward the anode. Once the fish reaches the anode, swimming will stop. The fish will go into a state of narcosis (stunned). Narcosis will only last for a few seconds. At this point, the fish are netted and put into a holding tank for observation. After observation, the fish are released. We can make many determinations and offer recommendations to make fishing more enjoyable for your family, company parties or your private getaway. Electrofishing Surveys were only available for high end customers. Technology has advanced where these services can be more affordable and accessible to the common pond and lake owner.
DETERMINING THE AGE OF YOUR BASS
This is an important step of a Pond Assessment. This will give us the base guideline and making a recommendations. Some ponds need a supplement of bluegill, some need bass taken out. This will determine what sizes and weights need to be culled out of a pond or lake. It takes up to 5l pounds of bluegill give to give you roughly 1 pound bass. So ratios of bluegill and bass are important.
COMMON PROBLEMS WITH POND AND LAKES IN LOUISIANA
Common problems with most pond and lakes is catching common size bass. Pond and lake owners experience catching too many 2 pound bass and catching them too frequently. Most of the time the problem is created when pond and lake owners do not take out enough fish and the impoundment becomes over crowded. Sometimes the forage base is lacking and this can be determined with a Lake Shocking.
